Drill Down
Into the Data Behind Your Dashboard

Click any data point on a Draxlr dashboard to explore the story behind it. View the underlying rows, group by any field, zoom into time-series trends, or jump to another dashboard with filters applied—no SQL required.

What is Drill Down Analysis?

Drill down analysis is the process of moving from a summarized view of data to the detailed records beneath it. Instead of building a new report, you click a data point—a bar, slice, row, or cell—and the dashboard reveals the next level of detail behind that number.

In Draxlr, drill down is built into every dashboard element. Click once to view the underlying rows, break the value down by another field, or zoom into a finer time level—and one more click resets the view. Here is how the three related techniques compare:

TechniqueHow it works
Drill downMove from a summary to the detail beneath it, within the same view—like a month into its days. In Draxlr, View Data, Group By, and Zoom In break a clicked data point into rows, segments, or finer time levels, right in place of the dashboard element.
Drill upReturn to the higher-level view once you have your answer. In Draxlr, one click on reset restores the original chart.
Drill throughJump to related data in another report or tool. In Draxlr, custom drill downs open another dashboard, a saved query, or an external link, carrying the clicked row's values along.

View the Data Behind Any Data Point

Every number on a dashboard has a story. Click a segment on any graph, table, or pivot and select View Data to see the underlying rows that make up that value—shown in place of the element, with one click to reset back. It is the fastest way to go from an aggregated metric to the actual records behind it.

Group By Any Field, On the Fly

Break any data point down by another field without editing the underlying query. Click a segment, pick a field like customer, employee, or country, and watch the value split into a clear breakdown. Keep grouping deeper until you find your answer.

Zoom Into Time-Series Trends

On time-series graphs, drill down through the natural time hierarchy: year to month, month to day, day to hour, hour to minute. Each zoom narrows both the period and the granularity—so you can trace a yearly trend down to the exact hour a spike happened.

Drill Through to Dashboards, Saved Queries & Links

Define what a click means on each dashboard element with custom drill downs. Open another dashboard in a popup with filters applied from the clicked row, show a saved query scoped to the clicked segment, or open any URL—your CRM, admin panel, or issue tracker—with row values inserted into the link.

Drill Down Use Cases for Every Team

Anywhere a dashboard raises a question, drill down answers it on the spot—without exports, ad hoc SQL, or waiting on an analyst.

Sales: find what moved the number

Revenue dipped in March? Click the bar and group by region, rep, or product to see exactly where the drop came from—then view the rows to confirm the deals behind it.

Product: trace a spike to the hour

Signups jumped last week. Zoom from months to days to hours on the time-series graph to pinpoint the exact moment, and check the underlying rows for the source.

Support & Ops: jump to the system of record

Click an open-tickets metric and use a link drill down to open the matching list in your helpdesk or admin panel, with the clicked values passed in the URL.

Finance: verify every KPI

Before the numbers go to the board, click any KPI and view the underlying transactions. Every figure on the dashboard is one click away from its proof.

Feature Highlights

Other Top Features

Works on Graphs, Pivots & Tables

Drill down from bars, line points, pie slices, table rows, and pivot cells. Every dashboard element opens the same click menu.

In-Place Exploration with Reset

Results render in place of the dashboard element—no popups or page reloads. One click on reset brings the original chart back.

Context Carried as Filters

Map clicked values and active dashboard filters to the target dashboard or saved query, with example values previewed as you set it up.

Live Data, Nothing Stored

Every drill down queries your database in real time. Draxlr never stores your data, so you always see the latest numbers.

Drill Down FAQs

Does drill down work on tables and pivot tables?

Yes. Drill down works on every dashboard element—graphs, tables, and pivots. Click a chart bar, pie slice, table row, or pivot cell and the same drill down menu appears, with View Data, Group By, Zoom In, and any custom drill downs configured for that element.

What is the difference between drill down and drill through?

Drill down reveals more detail within the same chart, like breaking a month into days. Drill through navigates to related data somewhere else—another dashboard or report. Draxlr supports both: View Data, Group By, and Zoom In work in place, while custom drill downs open another dashboard, a saved query, or an external link with the clicked row's values passed along.

Do I need to write SQL to drill down?

No. Every drill down action works with clicks—Draxlr builds and runs the queries against your live database for you. If you want full control, you can still open the underlying saved query and edit it.

Which databases does drill down work with?

Drill down works on dashboards built from any database Draxlr connects to, including PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, MariaDB, Supabase, BigQuery, Snowflake, ClickHouse, Redshift, and more.
